Angela Eagle is among those tipped to fight Jeremy Corbyn for a leadership challenge - after the Labour leader lost a vote of no confidence by MPs.

A total of 172 MPs voted for the motion with 40 MPs voting against with a turnout of 95%.

The confidence vote is not binding on Mr Corbyn to stand down as Labour leader but will pile further pressure on him after more than 40 members of his shadow cabinet and ministerial team resigned over the weekend and on Monday.

It's believed Ms Eagle and Tom Waton could be decided who should stand against Corbyn if there were to be a leadership challenge.

The Wallasey MP was among those resigned from the Shadow Cabinet following the result of the EU referendum.

On Monday she claimed it was an 'agonising decision' to stand down.

Meanwhile a petition calling for Ms Eagle's resignation has received more than 2000 signatures since being set up this week.

It reads: “We wish Angela Eagle to resign as MP of Wallasey, as she does not represent our constituents views and our wishes. She should have supported Corbyn, not resigned. Keep Corbyn. Eagle Resign.”
