Adelphi workers walk out on strike

Low paid workers at Liverpool's Adelphi Hotel have walked out on strike in a row over pay

Workers at Liverpool's Britannia Adelphi Hotel are staging the first of two strikes over Christmas, in a row over pay.

RMT members at the hotel have not booked on for their shifts today and will stay out on strike until midnight today - with a repeat scheduled for New Year's Eve - two of the Hotel's busiest days of the year.

Staff say they're frustrated at Britannia's unwillingness to renegotiate wages - despite a 40% rise in profits. Employees want the compant ro discuss paying the Living Wage of £8.45 per hour - currently they pay minimum wage.

RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said:

“It is shameful that the Adelphi’s owners are sweating both their assets and their workforce while paying the lowest possible wages.

“Tourism in Liverpool is booming, yet Britannia is denying its staff a fair share of the profits they have generated.

“Britannia Group boss Alex Langsam has raked in a personal fortune of £220 million on the backs of our members’ labour, and they have had enough.

“Britannia can clearly afford to pay a living wage, and the company knows that RMT is ready to talk whenever they are, but our members have served notice that they will no longer be treated like Victorian-era servants.”

Britannia Hotels finance director Robert Ferrari has insisted the hotel will run as normal during the strike.
