A five-year-old girl has suffered injuries to her head, neck and hand after being bitten by a dog in Norris Green.

Officers were called to Wellesbourne Place just after 7pm on Friday after a report that a dog had attacked a child.

The little girl was taken to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool shortly after 7pm and will require surgery. Her injuries are not life-threatening.

Officers arrested a 24-year-old man from Norris Green on suspicion of having a dog dangerously out of control on Friday 9 December. He has since been released pending a disposal decision whilst the investigation continues.

The dog is believed to have belonged to a relative of the girl and was not a breed prohibited under the Dangerous Dogs Act.

It sustained injuries during the families’ struggle to restrain it and was taken to a vet, who put the dog down due to the injuries that it had received.
