A man is being questioned on suspicion of assault after a teenager was slashed in Kirkby.

Officers were called to Webster Park, near Cherryfield Drive, to a report a male was being attacked by a group of males just before 8.35pm on Sunday.

Police attended and a 14-year-old boy was found with slash wounds to his head, arm and hand. He was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries, which were found to be superficial.

Following a search of the area, a 17-year-old male from Kirkby was arrested on suspicion of Section 18 assault and possession of an offensive weapon. He has been taken into custody to be interviewed.

Enquires are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident, and to identify all those involved.

Detective Inspector Tony O'Brien said: “It is shocking to think that a teenager can be attacked in this way in a park, and we are doing everything we can to find all those responsible and bring them to justice.

“We have made an early arrest, and are conducting house to house enquires and seeking potential witnesses so that we can understand what happened and track down all of those responsible.

“We have some positive lines of enquiry, but are still keen to hear from anyone else who might have been in the park at the time to come forward with information.

“No-one, let alone a 14-year-old boy, should fall victim to knife crime and I appeal to anyone who saw anything, or has heard who might have done this, to do the right thing and come forward.”

Det Insp O'Brien added: “We devote significant resources and regularly conduct targeted operations across Merseyside to rid our streets of the scourge of knife crime, as well as going into schools to educate young people.

“I would urge anyone thinking about carrying a knife to think again. Spare yourself and others the risk of serious injury, and the anguish it brings to relatives, and save yourself from time in police custody.

“It is just not worth the risk. Every day we are out on patrols, conducting stop searches, executing warrants and after incidents such as this, putting every effort into arresting offenders and putting them before the courts. We also search land and homes where we believe knives have been stored and if you involve yourself in knife crime, it is only a matter of time before you end up hurt or arrested.”
