US horror filmmaker Wes Craven dies aged 76

American horror film director known for 'Scream' and 'A Nightmare On Elm Street'

American horror film director Wes Craven died aged 76 at his Los Angeles home on Sunday after losing his battle with brain cancer.

He wrote, directed and edited his first film, 'The Last House on the Left,' in 1972 and then wrote and directed 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' in 1984. He went on to produce the largely successful 'Scream' franchise.

Craven was credited with reinventing the teen horror genre and had continued to work on projects including the MTV 'Scream' series.

Actors posted tributes on social media including actress Courtney Cox, who starred in all four films in the 'Scream' franchise.

Craven was married to producer Iya Labunka, and is survived by her, a son, a daughter and a stepdaughter.
