Workers at Humberside airport vote for strike action
It follows a ballot of staff at the Kirmington
Last updated 13th Sep 2023
A number of workers at Humberside airport have voted to go on strike.
They're walking out in a row over pay.
Almost three quarters of workers balloted at the Kirmington base back strike action
It means security staff, firefighters, refuellers, cleaners and travel shop staff will all walk out on a date yet to be confirmed.
The latest pay offer was rejected with unions claiming workers would still have been on significantly lower pay than their counterparts at other airports.
"Humberside airport needs to invest in staff"
UNISON Yorkshire and Humberside regional organiser Michael Parkinson said: “Staff have made it clear they’re not willing to accept being paid lower than people doing the same job in airports like Manchester and Leeds Bradford.
“The employer should be looking to invest in staff, and the airport as a whole, especially after the closure of Doncaster Sheffield Airport.
“Humberside Airport has a great opportunity to develop business, but it needs to invest in staff to do that.”
A Humberside Airport spokesperson said:
This represents only around 11 per cent of the total but it's disappointing
We are disappointed by the outcome of this ballot.
We believe the pay offer is fair and reasonable and made in the best interests of staff and the airport’s future.
The numbers voting for industrial action represent around 11 per cent of the total workforce of Humberside airport.
We await more detail from the union around possible industrial action and have mitigation plans in place to minimise any disruption to our passengers and operations.
We remain available for discussion with the trade union.
