Two young, local girls who drifted out to sea on an inflatable off the coast of Cleethorpes have been brought to shore safely.

The coastguard were called out at around 5pm yesterday (27/07/2021) and found the pair almost 400 meters out between Fuller Street Bridge and Grimsby Docks.

They're now urging people NOT to take inflatables to the beach - stating that they're only designed for safe waters like swimming pools.

Cleethorpes Coastguard released the following statement:

"CGOC Humber received a call from a member of the public who was concerned about two very young girls drifting out to sea clutching onto what appeared to be a blue inflatable snake!

"RNLI Cleethorpes team were also paged and tasked to carry out a search for the girls.

"They were seen by a member of Cleethorpes Beach Safety team about 300 to 400 out from the shoreline, between Fuller Street bridge and Grimsby Docks. The lifeboat crew quickly reached them and guided them back towards the shoreline where two of our team met them and brought them back to safety.

"They were two young local girls that had come to beach without any adults and decided they wanted to play in the sea with their inflatable. They had absolutely no idea whatsoever what danger they had put themselves in! They were given suitable words of advice and went on their way, oblivious of what had just happened.

"Inflatable toys are not designed to be used on the sea or any other tidal waters. They are designed to be used in safe waters, such as swimming pools. For the safety of you and your children, please do not bring inflatables to the beach. The river Humber has very strong currents, which will very quickly wash you out to sea."
