It was a night full of excitement as thousands of people turned up to watch Grimsby Town's open top bus parade to celebrate promotion.

They toured parts of Cleethorpes before heading over to Grimsby Town Hall for 6-30 where they celebrated at a civic ceremony.

They were greeted by the Mayor, the Leader of the council and thousands of cheering supporters.

The Mariners secured promotion after winning Sunday's National League Play off final at the London Stadium.

They beat Solihill Moors 2-1 in extra time after the game finished 1 all following completion of the usual 90 minutes.

It marked an amazing run which saw them beat Notts County, Wrexham and Solihull Moors - all in extra time.

On all three occasions they came back after going behind.

It means they now prepare for life in League 2, just one season after they were relegated.

Crowds

We spoke to fans in Town Hall Square.

One woman told us: "We're buzzing, really really excited".

"We had to get our wigs out again, we wore them on Sunday and it was an amazing day".

Manager Paul Hurst told us:

"I think it took some of the lads by surprise that weren't here the first time."

"So delighted for them having worked so hard to get promoted a few years ago and then lose our status last season in difficult circumstances, to now get to this point is fantastic."

Mayor of North East Lincolnshire Councillor Steve Beasant said:

"It's not just about football it's about lifting a whole community".

"When the team does well the town does well and that's great."

"They deserve an honour like this because they've been brilliant, absolutely brilliant."

"And to do it in extra time in 3 matches is unbelievable."

Thousands of Mariners fans are now looking forward to next season and life back in League 2.

They'll be doing so with renewed optimism and some great memories.
