People in the region have been advised to attend organised bonfires and firework displays as the safest and often most spectacular way to celebrate bonfire night.

On their busiest night of the year, Humberside Fire & Rescue are trying to reduce the strain on their resources by discouraging small private bonfires.

Jonathan Clark from the service says you should check your bonfire for animals before you light it:

"Hedgehogs, squirrels and other sorts of burrowing animals, you know, potentially might think a pile up of wood and waste is a great place to hide or begin the hibernation.

"From a pets point of view, you know pets don't really share our enjoyment of the noise and the bangs and the lights. So keep pets indoors, certainly well away from bonfires and and fireworks."

He added that people need to remember to keep themselves safe:

"Never throw a lit firework. We've had facial injuries locally and nationally, and certainly a lot of burns to the hand and arm, you know, it goes off quicker than you think it's going to."

To keep things safe leading up to Bonfire Night, HFRS staff are working closely with Humberside Police and local Councils, to spot any illegal bonfires being built. Additionally, we're making sure fireworks are sold safely and legally.
