Skegness could be set to undergo redevelopment to ensure and grow its future
Investors are being encouraged to bring their money to five seafront areas by East Lindsey District Council
Skegness has been primed for redevelopment after East Lindsey District Council designated five sites across the town to undergo improvements, including Southern Bowling Green and Southern Boating Lake. It is hoped investors will bring their money to grow the coasts future.
East Lindsey District Council are encouraging investors to look at five prime sites close to the Skegness seafront, which will help to shape its future.
Initial expressions of interests should be submitted by the end of the month, and full applications will be submitted in January 2023.
Councillor Steve Kirk, Portfolio Holder for the Coastal Economy at East Lindsey District Council tells us why this redevelopment has been proposed now:
"There's a lot of interest in Skegness, so we thought now is a good opportunity to ride that wave of interest and see what extra investment we could bring into town. It has to be something which is different, something new- that's what we're looking for. Something that could make Skegness stand out even more than it does already.
"There's lots of things that people have said they'd like to see in the town, things like a ice skating rink, roller rinks and thinks like that, even big covered venues. But obviously the investors will decide what they want to build, but it would be nice if they could do something that the local people could enjoy just as much as the visitors."
Skegness is the fourth most visited coastal town in the UK and to help drive growth even further, this Foreshore Masterplan has been created. At its heart is an expansion and diversification of a thriving visitor economy appealing to investment into the green, cultural, heritage, arts, sports and leisure markets that will benefit local communities and visitors alike.
Included in the Skegness Foreshore Masterplan, five sites have been primed, including Skegness chalet site, Southern Bowling Green, Southern Boating Lake, Former Festival Pavilion site, Pier Field Chalets.
Visitor Economy data shows that the area has approaching 2.2 million holiday visitors per year.
This is coming at a time of significant investment, for Skegness as the transformational multi-million-pound Towns Fund Deal projects, worth £24.5 million, will see the town centre and railway station undergo major regeneration.
The Skegness Foreshore project- part of the Connected Coast Town Deal- has a funding allocation of £2 milllion.
