Scunthorpe United relegated from the National League
It was confirmed following their 2 nil defeat to OIdham Athletic
Scunthorpe United have been relegated from the National League.
It follows this afternoon's 2 nil defeat at home to Oldham.
They'll be in the National League North next season.
Sadly it means a second relegation in successive seasons for the Iron.
It's been on the cards for some time but that won't make the pain any easier for fans.
Two years ago Scunthorpe only just survived relegation.
Last season they weren't so lucky and fell into the National League.
The Iron struggled all season
Supporters must have felt it would be time to regroup and come back stronger.
Yet the Iron have struggled all season and confirmation they are going down will come as no surprise to everyone who follows them.
All this from a team who little more than ten years ago were in the second tier of English football competing for a possible place in the Premier League.
This season began with some optimism that the drop would help the Iron to get back on track as they beat Yeovil in the first game.
Keith Hill left early in the season whilst owner Peter Swann stepped up efforts to sell
However that was short lived and Scunthorpe soon found themselves bottom.
They parted company with Keith Hill with owner Peter Swann looking to sell.
Tony Daws took over as interim manager but results didn't turn around.
A few weeks later he was replaced by another interim boss: Michael Nelson.
The Iron were still towards the bottom and early this year Scunthorpe made changes for both the team and in the boardroom.
David Hilton became the new owner and very soon appointed Jimmy Dean from Peterborough Sports as permanent manager.
Not unexpected but deeply sad
The team showed some signs of improvement but it was a mountain to climb and soon confidence appeared to be slipping as relegation loomed closure.
And the inevitable was confirmed today.
Not unexpected but deeply sad not just for Iron fans but football as a whole to see a club drop so far.
We spoke to many Iron fans who revealed their disappointment at some of the decisions taken at the club.
However many believed that with a new owner they can change things from next season.
Let's hope that is the case.
