Scunthorpe Hedgehog sanctuary at breaking point after casualty surge
Andrews Hedgehog Hospital is looking after 130
A hedgehog sanctuary near Scunthorpe is at risk of turning away injured animals after a surge in casualties.
Andrews Hedgehog Hospital is currently looking after 130.
Normally at this time of year they only have 40.
They're now in desperate need of more volunteers to help out.
Founder Veronica Tett fears summer is one of the main reasons for injuries, as more people work on their gardens.
"Injured, poisoned, sprayed, you name it we've had it, lots of broken bones.
"It's just horrendous.
"I've had sleepless nights."
She thinks education is key in turning North Lincolnshire into the safest place in the world for hedgehogs.
"You lose them and you think, what could I have done that I didn't do?
If you really look at it, you couldn't have done anymore.
"They come in, poor little things, and they are in a bad bad way, but we can't save them all."
"It's heartbreaking."
