Recycling collections resume today across North East Lincolnshire

They'd been temporarily suspended due to staffing issues

The temporary suspension of recycling collections in North East Lincolnshire ends today (August 18th).

If a household’s blue or grey recycling bin is due to be emptied on Friday, they are being urged to put it out as usual. Domestic waste and garden waste bins will be emptied as normal.

Recycling collections were suspended from July 31 due to a waste collection backlog. This was because of staffing issues, including some binworkers unexpectedly changing their working practices.

North East Lincolnshire Council had previously indicated recycling collections would resume mid-week or the latter part of this week. The council aims to complete Friday’s rounds on time and continue a regular service from then onwards. However, if your street is missed, the council is asking people to put their bin out again the next working day, Monday to Friday, and it will be emptied as soon as possible.

“We apologise to those who haven’t had their recycling bins emptied since we suspended collections,” Cllr Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for the environment. “I’m grateful to households for their patience during this short period of disruption.

“If Friday is your bin day, please put out your bins as you usually would.” Households can check their bin day online at www.nelincs.gov.uk/bins.

The council has also issued extra general advice:

If there’s not enough room in your recycling bin to wait for another month, the advice is to put recycling in their green bin temporarily, and it will be taken away with household waste. Any waste from the green bins is used to generate electricity at the energy from waste plant.

Household recycling can also be taken to the Community Recycling Centres (CRCs or tips) in Grimsby and Immingham.

If bins are not emptied in your street, the council asks to not call it. Instead, put your bins out by 7am the next day and these will be emptied as soon as possible.

Do not leave unemptied recycling bins in the street, bring them back onto your property.

While people’s recycling collections now have a definite date to resume normal service, the political row over bins continues. All political groupings have had their say during the disruption, with calls for a waste service review.
