New students moving to Lincoln are being urged to protect their belongings to help avoid becoming victims of burglary.

Lincolnshire Police said areas with a high student population can be at greater risk of burglary.

In June 2023 they launched the “beating burglary together” campaign to crack down on incidents.

Since then, reported cases of burglary are down nearly 20% from 1,642 incidents in 22/23 reducing to 1,332 incidents recorded in 23/24, according to local authorities.

The most significant reduction was in East Lindsey down over a third from the previous financial year.

Superintendent Phil Baker for Lincolnshire police said:

“We want to ensure that students are safe and that their belongings are not stolen.”

“Criminals will be actively out there looking for people who have left windows open and doors unlocked at night so make sure you lock them.

“If you have property, make sure it's marked and don’t put it on display. And hopefully, you won’t be a victim of crime.

“Report stolen items to us because if we do get that recovered it allows us to prosecute more easily those individuals and help to keep you safer.

“We are a relatively safe city, so come and enjoy the city the same as I did when I was a student.”

Lincolnshire police advise if you see a crime in progress call 999.

For reporting suspicious activity or information about someone you believe may be involved in committing burglary or selling stolen goods, call 101.

Alternatively, you can anonymously contact the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
