Work to start shortly on new lifeboat station in Cleethorpes
It'll be built at a cost of around 3 million
A new lifeboat station’s to be built in Cleethorpes.
Work to start the 3 million pound build will begin after the Easter Bank Holiday and will take around 12 months.
It will enable the charity to respond more quickly, in a wider range of weather conditions, to more incidents.
We spoke to Matt Mcnally from Cleethorpes RNLI.
He said "Where it is now is pretty much the only suitable place in Cleethorpes but it means that we'll be able to launch directly onto the beach.
"Our new station will have its own slipway going straight out onto the beach below the high tide mark".
"We'll be away from holidaymakers and those enjoying the beach whenever we launch".
"We do lots of jobs in the river and in the mouth of the river which requires a bigger more powerful lifeboat and one which is capable of operating in harsher weather conditions".
"To help us cover those shipping jobs means the need for a new station because there's no way we could fit an Atlantic 85 lifeboat in our current station."
"One of the earlier things we'll have to do is "piling" , driving steel piles into the beach and that's going to start around the middle of May".
"It's going to be noisy as the piles are banged into the sand."
"We've spent a lot of time working with the contractors and this is the only method".
