A letter was sent out to parents, staff and students yesterday after King Edward Vl Grammar school was alerted that a staff member had tested positive for coronavirus.

The NHS Test and Trace service has required the entire site and catering site to self-isolate for 14 days, following on from the positive result.

The headteacher said it means the school cannot meet any of its Health and Safety obligations, and has closed the facility to all students.

Headmaster James Lascelles wrote in the letter:

"Additionally, as cases continue to rise in the local area we also have over 120 students self-isolating from school and growing on a daily basis.

Furthermore, we have also had nine confirmed cases over the past three weeks. We have worked closely with the Local Health Protection Team on each of these cases and this has included agreeing the list of those required to self-isolate.

In addition to rising student numbers we are also experiencing mounting disruption as increasing numbers of staff are being asked to self-isolate by the NHS Test and Trace service."
