A Lincolnshire police officer who risked his own life to save a drowning man has been nominated for a top bravery award.

The man's car had slid on ice and crashed into a water filled dyke leaving him bleeding whilst the vehicle filled with water.

PC Phil McAllister responded to his 999 call and braved freezing conditions to get into the water.

He waded in the dyke without knowing how deep the water was.

He then smashed the window and eventually managed to drag the man out of the vehicle and to safety.

Paramedics arrived a short time after to give first aid.

Had PC McAllister waited for them the man may have not survived.

He's received praise for his actions and now stands the chance of winning the bravery award.

The winner is to be announced in December.
