Research has revealed you're more likely to have a car crash in Lincolnshire during the winter than almost anywhere else in the UK.

The colder months saw 370 crashes on the county's roads due to rain snow or fog in the ten years to 2022.

Lincolnshire has a lot of minor roads and that increases the risk.

We spoke to Simon Outen Coe from the Lincolnshire Road safety Partnership about the situation.

Lincolnshire has a huge network of roads and they can't all be gritted

He told us: "It's a vast network of roads."

"So we have over 5 and a half thousand miles of roads in a rural county."

"That means when it comes to winter driving they're prone to weather conditions."

"Whilst the primary routes are gritted we have a huge network where minor roads aren't."

"People need to drive according to those conditions."

We find a lot of accidents occur on minor roads

"You can end up with pockets of ice on roads so you can be travelling along perfectly safety on a stretch of road and all of a sudden you'll come into a frost pocket and find there's ice on the roads."

"It's impossible for the whole of the roads to be fully gritted and you'll find a lot of accidents occur on those more minor roads."

"Grit works by being embedded into the road surface by traffic volumes."

"If it's combined with windy weather then it'll blow off so you lose the gritting affect off the roads."

"If it rains after it and then refreezes - whilst the gritters will go out again it takes time to get back out and fully re-grit the network."
