The South Division of Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue service have been raising money in aid of the Fire Fighters Charity with an 80 day challenge
Last updated 20th Nov 2023
Lincolnshire Fire an dRescue have been helping to raise £80,000 for the Fire Fighters Charity as they celebrate 80 years.
8 individuals from the South Division have been doing a mile of activity each day, for 80 days.
It all started on the 1st of September, with eight people at the service setting out to complete one mile of activity every single day for 80 days.
This concludes on Sunday, the 19th of November.
Helen Gridley is the Divisional Commander of the South Division and also took on the challenge.
She said: “The difficulty isn’t really the distance, it’s fitting it into your day to day life. We’ve been quite busy recently with flooding, a lot of us have spent a long time out at incidents and our days have been quite long, so that’s been quite challenging”.
The Fire Fighters Charity
The challenge marks the 80th anniversary of the Fire Fighters Charity, hence 1 mile a day for 80 days.
Ms Gridley said: “They do employ an awful lot of people to keep these centres running and without fundraising from ourselves, these centres wouldn’t be available to us.
“They look after us throughout the year, so it’s only right that we try and raise the funds to make sure that they can carry on doing so”.
At the time of writing, £845 has been raised with a few days remaining.
The Final mile
All eight of the participants intend to complete the final mile together in Grantham on the 80th day.
Ms Gridley explains: “It seemed the right thing for us to do to bring our trainers along, and we’ll be walking a mile around Grantham town as a team, just to celebrate the end of our challenge”.
It will be a rare occasion for the group, since most of the challenge has been completed alone either before or after shifts at the Fire Service.
“It’s been quite difficult, I can’t say I’m disappointed we’re coming to the end, but it’s a good achievement!”
The group are still taking donations for their challenge, and you can do so through their Just Giving page |newtab).
