Lincoln City fans are able to attend a match for the first time in months for one of the biggest games in the club's history.

Just over 3 thousand spectators will watch the league one play off semi final first leg tonight against Sunderland.

The away leg is on Saturday which will decide who'll goes to Wembley for the final.

And those fans could be crucial to cheering on the Imps to victory.

We spoke to Damian Frogatt Operations manager at the LNER stadium.

He says they've brought in a number of measures to make the venue Covid safe.

There won't be turnstiles, they'll be social distancing in the stands and a one way system will be in operation.

The club is determined to do all they can to minimise the risk of infection with the game being one of the test events to see if sport can fully bring back crowds successfully.

The team remain confident they can reach Wembley.

The format of the competition means they play Sunderland home and away.

Since the North East club finished a place higher in league one they get home advantage in the second game.

The Imps will therefore want to ensure they take full advantage of their fans' backing tonight.

The aggregate score over both games will determine who goes to Wembley for the final.

There's no away goals rule so if the scores over the 2 legs are level after 90 minutes on Saturday the tie goes to extra time.

If that still doesn't separate them it's penalties.

The winner will play in the final at Wembley a week on Sunday with the victors there promoted to the Championship.

Meanwhile staff and players at Lincoln City remain quietly confident they can do it.

We spoke to manager Michael Appleton who says it's already been a good season for them.

He points out that less than 5 years ago the club were not even in the league.

Appleton also says they've faced tough times this season with a Covid outbreak as well as injuries to key players.

However he's praised his players for how well they've adapted and a great team spirit which helped secure them their play off place.

He says "when you see what they're capable of and what they've produced in some of the games this season there's the potential there to do it".

There was also praise from the boss for the way the team have competed and how they've conducted themselves.

Club Captain Liam Bridcutt has no doubt.

He told is he's confident they can do that.

We'll keep our fingers crossed and see what happens.
