Lincoln Christmas market organisers say visitor numbers were up on their 2019 level

Organisers of this years Lincoln Christmas market says visitor numbers were significantly up on 2019 levels.
It's estimated well over a quarter of a million people attended over the weekend, and the rain didn't seem to dampen spirits.
Over 150 stalls gathered in Castle Square, the Castle grounds, The Lawn, and Westgate providing a wide range of both local and national gifts, food and drink.
Market commander Simon Cole - burn says there are several reasons for their success.:
"People were looking forward to getting out and enjoying a Christmas market. We 've had a year off obviously in 2020. I think people were also looking forward to getting into the Christmas spirit generally after last year's Christmas was a bit disappointing . And there were a few other Christmas markets were cancelled so we may have benefitted from that"
Thousands took to Lincoln’s uphill area to take in the sights and smells of the market between 2-5 December for the City of Lincoln Council’s 39th year of the market.
Following the cancellation of all Christmas Markets in 2020 due to the UK’s Coronavirus pandemic, visitors returned to enjoy the market’s staple favourites including mulled wine and roasted chestnuts stalls, and fun for all the family in the form of a fun fair and big wheel offering spectacular views of Lincoln, including the magnificent Lincoln Cathedral, which was lit in purple for advent.
Lincoln Christmas Market welcomed more than 276,000 visitors to the city for its 2021 event, bringing record figures to the city for the first time in two years.
Cllr Neil Murray, Portfolio Holder for Economic Growth at City of Lincoln Council said:
“Lincoln Christmas Market was dearly missed last year and to have received such positive feedback for this year’s event is very rewarding.
“This market brings millions of pounds to the local economy and sees many visitors who go to the market at Christmas return again and again to the city to explore what else we have to offer.
“I’d personally like to thank all City of Lincoln Council staff involved in making this such a successful event, and to our partner organisations for all their work.
“We look forward to welcoming visitors back to the market in 2022.”
