The security of Northern Lincolnshire MPs is being reviewed following the stabbing of Sir David Amess.

Humberside Police say they are looking at how to ensure the safety of MPs.

Home Secretary Priti Patel has asked all police forces to look at the arrangements currently in place for the protection of Members of Parliament.

Sir David Amess, the Conservative MP for Southend West, was stabbed and killed during a constituency surgery on Friday.

A 25-year-old man has been arrested and remains in police custody.

Other MPs have come forward to say they have received abuse or death threats in their line of work.

It has raised questions about how MPs can engage safely with members of the public while remaining safe.

A spokesperson for Humberside Police said:

“The fatal stabbing of MP Sir David Amess was a despicable act and quite rightly, has sent shockwaves across the UK.

“The Home Secretary has asked all police forces to review security arrangements for MPs with immediate effect and we can confirm that we are underway with how we can do that for all MPs across the Humberside region.

“We are working with other forces across the UK, along with the Home Office, to agree an approach on how best to ensure the safety of our MPs, and more widely, our communities at large.”

Some MPs say they have been left fearing for their lives after threats, and Justice Secretary Dominic Raab says he a person threatened to throw acid on him.

Brigg and Goole MP Andrew Percy shared his fears that escalating political language was putting MPs at the threat.

He said: “Whilst we do not know the motives of the killing of David Amess, it is a further reminder that those of us involved in mainstream party politics have way more in common with each other than not.

“We are all motivated by the same aim of wanting to do the best for our constituents and our country. We just sometimes disagree on the policies to achieve that.

“That is why I have become increasingly concerned at the extreme language used by mainstream politicians in recent years to describe political opponents.

For democracy to work, it requires us to respect our political opponents in the mainstream.

“Describing them as ‘scum’ or such like is never acceptable but it is always dangerous. Dehumanising political opponents in a democracy never ends well!”
