Humberside police have launched a major initiative designed to help anyone experiencing domestic abuse in the region.

A new app will offer instant access to legal support and protection to those who are affected by the issue.

The 'We protect' app on officers' phones aims to get people an advisor who will be able to put safeguarding measures in place.

Richard Sage is a detective inspector for safeguarding at the force.

This provides an alternative we can instantly use

We spoke to him about the app.

He told us: "Sometimes engaging with the police might not be an option for them at that time."

"This provides an alternative that we can instantly use at the scene as long as they consent."

"It can get their name into an organisation that is there to help them. "

"An early arrest of an offender is one of the best options that we've got because it removes them from the property, it safeguards the victim of domestic abuse immediately and gives us a bit of breathing space to put those extra support measures in place."

We can use protection orders to give the victim breathing space

"We have the app downloaded onto Humberside police phones which means our response officers can instantly refer victims of domestic abuse into the DA allowance through an application called We Protect."

"Some of the support services will come in as well because we might have to bail."

"We'd use bail conditions as well to try and restrict their access to the victim."

"We can use domestic violence protection orders which put conditions in place which give the victim a little bit of breathing space and some safeguarding. "
