It's been confirmed the Government are looking at RAF Scampton to possibly house asylum seekers in the future.

At the start of the week West Lindsey District Council unveiled ÂŁ300 million pound plans for the former base.

Then the home secretary told MP's a new illegal migration bill will mean those arriving from the Channel can be held for 28 days until they're removed, but no locations were confirmed.

West Lindsey District Council told us they have spoken to the Home Office and were told today that Scampton is one of a number of sites they are assessing.

The Council says it doesn't believe the site is suitable.

Cllr Bierley, Leader of West Lindsey District Council said:

“We have spoken to the Home office today and they have confirmed that they are looking at RAF Scampton as one of a number of sites that they are assessing.

“We are extremely concerned by what impact this will have on our existing local community, given the close proximity to Scampton schools and nursery.

“Given the site has poor public transport connectivity and is remote in nature to service, we believe this would not be suitable for asylum seekers.

“We have an investment plan ready to go and if the Home Office was to go ahead with this site that would be contrary to its longer-term investment and Levelling Up Plans and impacts our £300 million investment plans.”
