More than 6,800 people in the UK are spending the start of 2023 waiting for an organ transplant – and over 100 of those are in Lincolnshire alone.

These mums, dads, wives, husbands, partners, daughters, and sons can only be saved by someone's decision to be an organ donor.

That's why NHS Blood and Transplant are urging people to sign up in the New Year.

Gordon Crowe is a Task Manager for the Organ Donation Service Teams, and regularly operates from Lincolnshire's Boston, Grimsby and Scunthorpe hospitals.

Being a donor can "save a life"

He’s encouraging people to take on board a different style of a new years resolution this year:

"In Lincolnshire there are 103 people waiting for an organ transplant.

It's very important that people sign up and they tell their loved ones, as that organ donation and transplantation is that life saving gift and especially at this time of year."

There's already 463,000 people on the NHS Organ Donor Register in the county.

Gordon says it really can make all the difference:

"For those people who receive a transplant - it is a life saving transplant for them. For whoever receives it. Despite the organ whether it's a liver, or kidney, or a heart, or lung.

Kidney is the organ needed by the most people

For them it's life saving. The wider family that also has an impact on."

The most in need organ across Lincolnshire is a Kidney, with 93 people waiting for one.

The numbers get smaller for other organs, with less then five people waiting for a heart, less than five waiting for lungs, and less than five waiting for a liver.

"We know that one donor can save up to nine lives.

If somebody's on the register then it's very important that they tell their loved ones so that in the unfortunate event they may be in a position to be a donor, their loved ones will also know what their decisions in life were."

Please tell your family about your decision so that they know what you want.
