A fountain in Grimsby has been badly damaged due to anti social behaviour.

It was installed less than a year ago close to the Garth Lane Bridge but now it's understood the electricity feed was affected.

The council says it's looking at options to restore it.

It was heralded for being run entirely on renewable energy sources, and acting to improve water quality.

A council spokesperson has said the reason for the fountain’s inactivity is because of anti-social behaviour

We are currently looking at options to restore the fountain

“As a result of recent anti-social behaviour underneath the new Garth Lane bridge, the electricity feed to the fountain was affected."

"We are currently looking at options to get this restored and put back in place.”

The fountain was unveiled in December 2022.

It followed the removal of more than 2,230 tonnes of silt and waste from the river earlier that year.

The fountain aims to build on this by increasing aeration of the water, reducing algae growth and helping to protect local wildlife.

It's not the only example of anti-social behaviour at the bridge this year

The Environment Agency approved its installation too, finding it would comply with regulations to ensure the safety of eels.

Unfortunately, for the intentions to improve the water quality and provide an attraction in Grimsby, just the fountain spout can be seen currently, with no magnificent water jet pouring upwards.

The apparent damage to the fountain’s electricity feed is not the only example of anti-social behaviour at the bridge this year.

A CCTV feed was installed by Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue to stop youths disturbing a swan nest.

Thankfully, this worked and the cygnets that hatched are almost fully developed.
