A Grimsby fish supplier says the nature of his business is changing as people are spending less and less on fish.

It comes as the rising cost of energy bills and increasing costs of cooking oil due to the war in Ukraine are pushing up the price of fish.

Richard Dutton who owns Grimsby Traditional Fish Club says he's having to find new ways of making fish more affordable for customers.

He said:

“When my customers ask how much the fish is and I put it on the scales, they look shocked. So it’s then my job to say ’that’s enough for three meals why don’t I portion that up for you’ and that’s the only way to sell it.

“In December last year, I was buying salmon for around a tenner, now it’s more like £15-£10. You then have to go back to the customer and let them know you’re putting your prices up.

“No one wants to spend anything, I know that if I don’t sell that fish I’m £600 down and that’s without the fuel and cleaning products. It’s a massive gamble everyday."
