Former Newark school could be turned into apartments
Newark and Sherwood District Council’s planning committee will now consider the application
A former infant school could be turned into apartments as part of new plans.
The Newark school building could be given a new lease of life after it was closed in July 2021.
Christ Church C of E school opened a new purpose-built site at the Middlebeck housing development in September 2021, leaving the former building empty.
Now, Olivander Investments has applied to turn the school, in Victoria Street, into eight one-bedroom apartments – six of which feature their own home office.
The applicant also wishes to demolish a canopy built for the school which is “crude in its detailing and hides the characterful school buildings behind”.
Eight parking spaces would be provided with the plans.
Applicant documents stated: “There are eight apartments in total. Apartments one to six are converted from the old school rooms and are very light and airy and give an area significantly above the National space standards. Apartments 7 and 8 are in the old ancillary rooms.
“The limited works to the interior and exterior of the building do not adversely affect the character of the building.
“The removal of the canopy has a positive impact on the character and quality of the Conservation area.”
Newark and Sherwood District Council’s planning committee will now consider the application.
