Former Grimsby club to become housing
A building on Victoria Street was once Secrets, a cabaret bar and later became Musika
A lost nightclub in Grimsby town centre is set to be converted into flats.
A building on Victoria Street was once Secrets, a cabaret bar which was popular with the LGBT community, and later became Musika.
However, the first-floor venue has been closed for several years now, and a planning application says there is little chance of it reopening in the current climate.
DMC Architecture Limited have asked for permission to build a second storey extension and create a total of 13 flats.
The ground floor business will remain unchanged.
The plan says:
“Due to the economic downturn and lack of demand for the premises, it is no longer viable to sustain the upper floors of the premises, and therefore, a Change of Use to residential units is being sought to preserve and maintain the building’s future.
“The provision of residential units will allow people to have the option to live within the town centre without having to commute to work along with the associated leisure and retail facilities readily available by the site’s location.
“The site has previous residential use over retail units, which follows the grain of other developments in the commercial area.
“In terms of economic context the proposed residential units will hopefully, secure the building’s future and offer the opportunity to maintain a presence to the street scene in this part of the Town Centre of Grimsby rather than the premises becoming vacant.”
Previous plans at the site over the years have include a pub/cafe and a shopping unit.
Secrets moved to the Pasture Street location in November 2008, boasting a range of themed nights, full cabaret and foam parties.
It later went on to become the second Musika branch, with the original on the Riverhead, and was known for its retro nights.
