Festive drink and drug-drive crackdown begins across Lincolnshire

Police ramp up checkpoints and patrols as December safety blitz gets underway

Lincolnshire Police have begun their month-long crackdown on drink and drug driving as Operation Limit gets underway across the county.

Extra patrols and roadside checkpoints are now in place as officers target drivers who get behind the wheel under the influence during the festive season.

Inspector Jason Baxter, from the Roads Policing Unit, said the operation is about education, engagement and enforcement in a month when more people are out celebrating.

“We prioritise drink and drug driving all year round, but December sees a concentration of our efforts,” he said. “Drivers need to understand the consequences — a hefty fine, a driving ban, and a criminal conviction.”

The force says driving impaired is a potentially deadly decision. National figures show nearly one in five fatal crashes involve a driver or rider affected by drink or drugs.

Throughout December, officers will be stationed at key locations checking motorists’ breath and saliva samples. Inspector Baxter says the message is simple:

“It’s vital that the people using our roads are fit to do so. If you’re out drinking, don’t drive — arrange a taxi or a designated driver. And remember, you could still be over the limit the next morning.”

Drink and drug driving: what you need to know

  • You may still be over the limit the morning after drinking.
  • The legal alcohol limit is 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood or 35 micrograms per 100ml of breath.
  • Even small amounts of alcohol can impair driving - the safest option is no alcohol at all if you’re driving.
  • It’s an offence to drive with any of 17 controlled drugs above specified limits.
  • Limits for illegal drugs are set extremely low.
  • Always check with a doctor or pharmacist if prescribed or over-the-counter medication could affect your ability to drive.
