There are fears many pet owners across Lincolnshire and Newark may have bought a dog from a puppy farm, sometimes without even realising.
New findings from the Kennel Club show 1 in 4 dog owners in the UK suspect their animal may have come from such a farm.
Almost a third of those get sick or die in their first year.
We've spoken to North Lincolnshire kennel club breeder Lesley McFayden who told us people need to do their research.
Many puppy farms just want a quick turnover
"People do impulse buy which is really unfortunate when you're dealing with something that's a live being."
"What they don't think is - is that the right breed for my lifestyle."
"Puppy farms just want a quick turnover - they want your money basically - they don't want back up."
"It's the pups that suffer always."
They could go to a new owner with worms or a lot worse
"The reputable breeder will always make sure they carry out DNA and clinical testing."
"To cut corners the puppy farmers potentially won't do that because it eats into their profit."
"If they've not been reared well they could easily gets infections when they're young."
"They could go to a new owner with worms or a lot worse."
"It's not just about them potentially spending a lot of money on something - it's also about them ending up with a pup in their home that's going to live a long and healthy life."
"And they're also going to buy from a reputable breeder that's going to be there for that pup too for help and advice."
