Cleethorpes' waterfall restored after foam vandalism
Crowds gathered to watch as the bubbling foam became so high that it covered the Pelican statue
Cleethorpes’ waterfall has been restored to normal after pranksters caused frothy mounds of foam to erupt from it.
The attraction on Cleethorpes’ Central Promenade had detergent emptied into it on Monday night.
Crowds of people gathered to watch as the bubbling foam became so high that it covered the Pelican statue.
Cars stopped to take pictures of the sight, which unfortunately has become a regular occurrence during the holiday season.
However, North East Lincolnshire Council have confirmed that it won’t cost the taxpayers to clean and restore the waterfall.
The attraction was turned off overnight as usual, which prevented more foam from bubbling up. The foam was allowed to settled down overnight.
Crews added an anti-foaming agent in the water before it was switched back on Tuesday morning.
This has allowed it to return to normal operation for visitors to enjoy without large piles of foam.
A spokesperson for North East Lincolnshire Council said:
“We were called about the foam last night Monday. The fountain switches off at dusk and this stopped more foam from forming.
“It settled down overnight and we added some anti-foaming agent this morning before the fountain started up for the day.”
Scunthorpe’s Central Fountain has also been targeted in the past by pranksters.
However, North Lincolnshire Council warned that rather than being harmless mischief, it can cause unnecessary expensive work.
The foam can prevent workers from removing debris from the fountain, causing them to get clogged in the filtration system.
