A number of charities and companies, which help rehabilitate offenders across Lincolnshire and Newark, have been awarded a slice of ÂŁ200m.

The government cash will be spent on specialist housing, employment and training support, with hopes it'll reduce re-offending.

Lincolnshire Action Trust has been given ÂŁ544,992 to support women in the criminal justice system.

Chief Exec Alison Goddard says intervention is key.

"Many women have been involved in particularly traumatic experiences throughout their life, this could be in childhood or as a result of domestic violence in relationships for example.

"The approach that is taken with women is quite different to that which is taken with men.

"It will use a trauma informed approach. We'll take account of the trauma they may have experienced in their life and attempt not to reinforce or refocus on that trauma, but to help them move away from it.

"Ultimately, it'll reduce the number of victims, crimes and amount spent on the criminal justice system.

"It leads to better outcomes for everybody. Not just the individual and their families directly involved in the criminal justice system, but communities, the general public and society at large."

Prisons and Probation Minister Alex Chalk is backing the move.

“Tackling things like homelessness, unemployment and illiteracy is vital to our drive to cut crime but these issues cannot be solved by our brilliant probation staff alone.

“The expertise and support of charities and companies like those we are funding today plays a crucial role in helping offenders to rehabilitate and lead a crime-free life.”
