South Holland District Council and Boston Borough Council are working on a new joint local plan, which will set the rules for future building and land use.

At the same time, they are putting together a strategy for conservation areas in Spalding, Holbeach and Boston, aiming to protect historic buildings while allowing for careful updates.

During a meeting of the South East Lincolnshire Joint Strategic Planning Committee, councillors stressed the importance of keeping the visual appeal and heritage features – like Georgian and Victorian joinery, sash windows and distinctive doorways – intact.

Councillor Ingrid Sheard said developers should work to preserve local identity when carrying out work on historic properties, adding that it’s vital to make sure old buildings aren’t lost among new developments.

Vice chairman Coun James Avery explained the councils are following government rules on drawing up a local plan, and are working closely with residents and businesses to make sure future housing is built in a sustainable way.
