With the hot weather continuing there's a warning the heat could be having a major impact on older people across Lincolnshire and Newark with an increased risk of illness or even death.

Heatwaves 2 years ago led to an estimated 4 and a half thousand people across the country dying, many of them over 70.

We've been speaking to Mandy Palser from the Age UK branch that covers Lincoln and South Lincolnshire.

The big obvious one is to keep hydrated by eating foods that contain liquid and drinking

She told us: "The big obvious one is to keep hydrated by eating foods that contain liquid - and also drinking."

"Wearing lighter coloured clothing - light in weight as well."

"Keep windows open but keep curtains closed - especially when the sun's shining on the property."

She also suggests that we keep an eye on older neighbours.

"You may not see them out in the garden for instance as much - you may notice the bins are not going out."

They can become dehydrated if they're not having a good intake of fluid

"Just regular interaction that you may not have seen for the last day or so."

"Just to pop your head in - make sure they're OK and ask if there's anything they may need."

"Encourage them to use fans around the home - a lot of older people like to carry the hand fans as well."

"To not go outdoors unless necessary during the hotter part of the day."

"If it is necessary then do wear a sun hat - carry fluid with you."

"They can become dehydrated if they're not having a good intake of fluid whether that be through drinking or the intake of fruit."
