Date set for A180 roadworks
Parts of busy dual carriageway set for closures
Closures – including two full weekends – are planned on the A180 in the coming weeks while National Highways has responded to Martin Vickers’ call for a date to replace concrete sections on the notoriously noisy dual carriageway.
Essential maintenance works will take place on the westbound side between the Stallingborough A1173 junction and junction 5 of the M180, Barnetby, on from May 28. Motorists have been advised to allow extra time to travel.
The works follow on from emergency repairs on both sides of the carriageway that have already taken places. The westbound side will be subject to overnight closures from 8pm to 6am between May 28 and 30.
There will then be two weekend closures for this section of the road. The first will take place from 8pm on May 31 until the morning of June 3.
This will be followed by a further full weekend closure between 8pm on June 7 and 6am on June 10, with a further overnight full closure scheduled for June 10.
The concrete sections of the A180, notorious for their noisy surface, were raised in Parliament on Wednesday. Cleethorpes MP Mr Vickers asked the Transport Secretary for a firm date on work to replace the concrete.
Not given this, he was assured of future works to “substantially reduce” noise levels caused by the surface, and offered a meeting with the Roads Minister.
Mr Vickers has said he will meet Roads Minister Guy Opperman with Great Grimsby MP Lia Nici to “reiterate the need for action at the earliest opportunity”. He expressed understanding that National Highways, responsible for the road’s maintenance, have a lot of demands on their resources. But it was “not good enough” that six years since National Highways committed to the concrete section’s replacement, his constituents were still having to tolerate it.
The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) followed up with National Highways for the current schedule on its timetable to replace it, and if recent emergency repairs will influence the speed of the section’s replacement. It was stated that final costs for the design and delivery of the concrete section’s replacement are still to be confirmed, but further repair works will occur beforehand. Simon Boyle, National Highways regional director for Yorkshire and the North East, said: “Safety is always our top priority and we aim to ensure our roads remain safe and reliable for all.
“We’re due to begin work on the A180 westbound between Stallingborough, at the A180’s junction with the A1173, and junction 5 of the M180 (Barnetby) on 28 May. These works form part of a programme of work on the A180, with further repairs and resurfacing scheduled to take place from October this year and expected to last around six months.
“This will ensure the A180 continues to provide safe and smooth journeys until a longer-term scheme to replace the concrete section of this road is developed and approved. Final costs for the design and delivery of this are still to be confirmed.
“We will remain in close contact with Martin Vickers MP as well as road safety groups, the local authority, residents and other key stakeholders and continue to listen to their feedback, keeping them updated on future plans for the route. Anyone who would like to get in touch with us about the A180, or any schemes in the region, are very welcome to do so.”
National Highways has stated all the repair works are weather dependent. Extra contingency dates are in place if it needs to be scheduled. More information about work beginning on 28 May, including timescales, is available on this page.
