A village parish council is set to get £30,000 for a recreation ground makeover and Santa has received funding for a new sleigh.

New Holland Parish Council have successfully applied for the support to fund the replacement of playground equipment and to install adult gym equipment at the village’s recreation ground. The topic of the revamping of the village’s recreation ground has been a recurrent theme at parish council meetings.

The parish council have secured £38,000 to install a new zip wire and playtower and other items, thanks to the £30,000 community grant from North Lincolnshire Council and £8,000 from the parish council itself. A bid for £10,000 from the National Lottery to pay for adult gym equipment was unsuccessful.

But the parish council are looking at other funding sources and also seeking another £12,000 or so on top of this to be able to fund small children’s equipment in the next phase of the project. Meanwhile, a Winterton-based charity has also been successfully awarded a community grant from the council for a new Santa sleigh.

A spokesperson for New Holland Parish Council told the Local Democracy Reporting Service:

“New Holland’s community is very pleased to have been awarded this grant. The Recreation Ground equipment has needed renewing for some time with pieces wearing out or becoming unsafe and having to be removed.

“The Parish Council, in conjunction with suppliers Streetscape, are installing a new zip wire and a large play tower as well as some swings and smaller items.  The next phase will be equipment for younger children, together with picnic tables and benches.

“We also applied for lottery funding to provide some adult gym equipment but unfortunately we weren’t successful.  However, there are other sources of funding that we are investigating and we are confident that plans for the field will come to fruition in the next couple of years.

“New Holland has a strong community spirit – for instance a team of volunteers removed the old equipment and are now taking down some redundant fencing for use elsewhere. The Parish Council is very grateful to them and to North Lincs Council, particularly our Ward Councillors, for all the help and support they give the village.”

The aim of the renovation work is to encourage more children to use the recreation ground. Other latest recipients of Community Grant funding from North Lincolnshire Council included £2,410 for Thornton Curtis Parish Council for playground and picnic area improvements, £8,082 for St Andrew’s Church & Post Office, Burton, in part to create a  community café space in the bell tower, and £5,176 for a new sleigh for Santa.

The charity Winterton & District Lions Club are behind the unusual application to part fund Santa’s sleigh. During the sleigh run, money is collected from households to help support the Lions continue their charitable work.

Cllr Carl Sherwood, portfolio holder for safer and stronger communities – rural, said:

“We continue our strong track record of investing in all communities across North Lincolnshire, enhancing our natural environments and enabling the creation of areas where families and friends can come together.

“This latest round of grants will go a long way to making real change in these already flourishing communities, supporting a range of different projects designed to bring people together.

“We’ve invested thousands in community buildings, play equipment, paths, cycle routes, gardens, gyms and parks. I am sure this cash will make a huge difference to the communities set to receive it.”
