Grimsby midfielder Callum Ainley is set for a spell of recovery following surgery after being recently diagnosed with thyroid cancer.

If all goes well, the 26-year-old, who joined the Mariners from Crewe in the summer, could return to training in mid-to-late February.

"Callum has shown great strength of character since he received the news and he is currently being supported by the club to ensure he has everything he needs," Grimsby said in a statement.

"We would like to ask supporters and the media to respect his privacy at this time.

"We wish Callum a speedy recovery. We hope to see him back in a black and white shirt very soon."

Crewe also offered support, posting on the club's social media account: "We are all with you."
