When asked about their dream job, many children will say that they wish to be a police office when they are grown up.

Now, children from three primary schools in West Lancashire have been given the opportunity to live their dream.

West Lancashire Police have relaunched their Mini Police scheme, helping children aged between 9 and 11 to get involved with the police profession.

Initially set up in early 2020, the initiative ended up being mothballed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

However, this year, children attending three schools - Ormskirk Church of England school, Little Digmoor and Cobbs Brow - are able to work alongside the police.

All the pupils have been working in fostering Christmas spirit in their area, including singing for the community and making Christmas cards.

The programme was set up following the success of the Lancashire Police Cadet Scheme for 13-18 year olds to learn new skills and make a difference in their area, under the supervision of the police.

Speaking about the initiative, PSCO Stephen Edmond, said: “We want to give all young people a chance to be heard, support their community and develop skills to become fantastic citizens in a fun, friendly and exciting way.

"We want to foster relationships, particularly in the harder to reach communities and build on public confidence in the police. Who knows, there may be one or two future police officers in there.”
