Three 'wolves' confirmed to be Alsatian dogs
The animals were spotted on Station Lane, prompting reports and concern from members of the public
Three large animals initially described as “wolves” have been identified as Alsation dogs.
The dogs have been safely secured and are now in kennels after being caught by officers and specialist dog handlers in Barton, near Preston.
The animals were spotted on Station Lane, prompting reports and concern from members of the public.
Officers quickly attended the scene alongside expert handlers, safely containing the dogs and transporting them to a secure facility.
Following veterinary assessments at the kennels, the animals have been identified as German Shepherd-type dogs rather than wolves.
A Lancashire Police spokesperson said: “The dogs were handed to our stray dog contractor and are safely in their kennels.
The vet at the kennels has identified them as a German Shepherd type dog. They will now be kept at the kennels to see whether they are claimed.
If not claimed, the kennels will take over responsibility for them and look to rehome them.”
Police confirmed that there is no wider danger to the public, and the animals remain safe and well.
In an earlier statement, Lancashire Police added: “We know this might have caused some discussion in the community, so we thought it important to provide you with this update and reassure you that there is not thought to be any risk to the public.
"Thank you to those who made reports to us or provided us with information or footage this afternoon.”
The dogs will remain under observation while checks continue to confirm their ownership and ensure their welfare before any decisions are made about rehoming.
