Blackpool and Lytham lifeboats called out to save two adults
They were taken to shore with signs of hypothermia
Blackpool RNLI's inshore Atlantic 85 crew, in conjunction with Lytham RNLI's volunteer crew, were involved in a joint training exercise when they were diverted to an emergency incident. Blackpool's inshore D-class lifeboat crew was also alerted to the incident.
Initially reported as individuals in the water, the Atlantic 85 crew discovered an inflatable dinghy carrying two adults. The dinghy had been carried offshore by the easterly wind, and the occupants were unable to return to the beach area. At one point, one of the individuals had to enter the water to retrieve a lost paddle. Both were rescued by the Atlantic 85, displaying signs of hypothermia and were transported to the shore before being handed over to the North West Ambulance Service.
Despite the sea being calm on Thursday evening, this incident emphasizes the need for people to be aware of wind conditions and the temperature of the water.
Richard Williams, Deputy Launch Authority at Blackpool RNLI said:
"It is fortunate the dingy occupants had a phone with them. They were able to call 999 and alert the Coastguard. We were pleased to be able to offer assistance. We would remind everyone undertaking activities on the water to always carrying a means of calling for help."
