This weekend, Tara Jones will make history by becoming the first woman to referee a men's Betfred Super League game, overseeing the match between Wigan Warriors and Huddersfield Giants on Saturday, 28th March.

Jones, who was previously a Women's Super League and England player, took her first Championship charge in March last year. Her achievements will be further recognized as she receives her MBE for services to rugby league on Tuesday.

Journey to the top-flight match

Upon learning of her landmark appointment, Jones expressed surprise mixed with excitement, describing her emotional response to the historic news.

“I was travelling on my way down to London to receive my MBE at Windsor Castle tomorrow...when Match Officials General Manager Andy Smith asked me to jump on a Teams call," Jones said.

Initially uncertain of the call's purpose, Jones was delighted to hear she would debut as a Super League referee this weekend and expressed gratitude for the support she received: “I really appreciate their support and them believing in me as well. And now I’m really looking forward to the weekend.”

Career progression and aspirations

Having started refereeing at age 12, Jones transitioned to a full-time official after retiring from playing at the end of 2024, displaying determination and ambition to reach this notable milestone.

“This has always been a lifelong ambition of mine to referee in Super League," Jones acknowledged. Her journey into officiating was motivated by her passion for the game and desire to continue being involved when she began in the boys' rugby leagues.

Born in Germany and raised in Warrington, Jones first took up rugby at Crosfields Amateur Rugby League Football Club. Her dedication and drive have paved the way for this significant achievement and it's likely she will inspire future generations to follow in her footsteps.
