St Helens to face Castleford Tigers in Challenge Cup final
Saints are hoping to get their hands on the trophy for the first time in 13 years
Up to 45,000 fans will pack Wembley later to watch St Helens meet Castleford Tigers in the Challenge Cup final.
Saints will hope to win the title that's eluded them for 13 years when the game kicks off at 3pm.
The last time they were in the final two years ago they were beaten 18-4 by Warrington Wolves but this time they're hoping for a reversal in fortunes.
Their assistant coach Paul Wellens said:
"Challenge cup finals are always special, I've been fortunate enough to be part of a few of them myself back when I played and I understand the emotions that these guys will be going through."
"We're fortunate to have, within the playing group, a number of players with a lot of big-game experience."
"The likes of James Roby and Jonny Lomax in particular, I'm happy to give them any advice where necessary but they're pretty well taken care of."
"When fans first came back you could see the lift that it gave our players."
"Just running out there onto the field and hearing the cheers go up again, we really took a lot from that."
"To be able to do that in a week where you're playing at a final with 45,000 at a stadium at Wembley, we can only imagine the excitement that the players will feel.
Owen Farnworth is one of the lucky Saints fans heading down for the final he told us he expects the atmosphere to be amazing:
"It's been a while since both sets of fans have had the opportunity to go to a game like this."
"It should be a fantastic atmosphere and obviously, the sun is going to shine as well which always helps."
"13 years is a while and that's a generation of Saints fans who haven't seen them win the cup."
"I'm only 17 and I've been following the team for a while now, probably six years so to see them win the Challenge Cup would mean the absolute world."
St Helens Borough Council Leader David Baines is also heading down, he said:
“On behalf of everyone at St Helens Borough Council, I would like to wish Saints the very best of luck this Saturday in the Challenge Cup final.
"Saints are fantastic ambassadors for our borough and fly the flag impeccably for us in the game of rugby league.
“Cup final day is always a special occasion but this one means so much more as it will be the first time we’ve been to a final since crowds have been allowed back. Those first renditions of ‘Oh When The Saints Go Marching In’ and ‘You Light Up My Senses’ will certainly be emotional.
