A teenager has been arrested - after a Southport FC player was allegedly subjected to online racial hatred and abuse on social media during a match with York City.

It happened on Saturday 9th October.

York City have thanked police and Southport FC for their "cooperation and assistance".

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: "A 15-year-old boy has been arrested in relation to this incident. He has been released on conditional bail and enquiries are ongoing."

In a statement last week (11th October), York City added: 'York City Football Club strongly condemns all forms of discrimination, and we are disappointed to learn of this incident - this behaviour has no place in society or football.'
