Southport votes Labour for the first time ever in historic election result
The constituency had always backed Conservatives since it was created
Voters in Southport have made history as they elected a Labour candidate to be their MP for the first time.
The constituency had previously voted for Conservative MPs during every election in the 139-year history of the region.
However, for this year's election, Labour candidate Patrick Hurley appealed to voters, earning 17,252 votes.
Hurley received an overall majority of nearly 6,000 votes, as Conservative candidate Damien Moore received 11,463 votes.
During the last election in 2019, Conservative candidate won the vote, with a majority of 4,000 votes.
Speaking following the result, Patrick told us that the showing for the Labour party was reflective of the national picture.
"Today has been a historic day for the country," he said. "After what had felt like far too long where the country had seen better days and there didn't appear to be a way out, the electorate have found a way out and now we embark on a decade of national renewal."
This comes as Merseyside turned completely red, with Conservative candidates being wiped out following the results.
