Police investigating the shooting of a young boy by an air weapon in Leyland say "someone of interest" has been identified.

Emergency services were called to Roadtrain Avenue on Monday evening after reports an 11-year-old had been hit with metal casings. It's thought he was trying to retrieve a ball from the back garden of a house.

The boy was taken for Aldery Hey, after suffering a suspected fractured skull, and has now been operated on.

In a new update, Detective Inspector Paul Mulrooney said: "I'm grateful to those who have come forward with information so far.

"We have now identified someone and we will be speaking to that individual in due course.

"We are confident there is no wider risk to anyone in the community."

Police say the boy's injuries are no longer serious, and he is making a good recovery.
