A second man has been arrested in connection with a man being shot in his leg in St Helens.

Police were called to Boxwood Gardens at around 10.30pm, after a man in his 40s was shot in his leg.

He received treatment in hospital but has now been discharged.

A 32-year-old man from St Helens has already been arrested by detectives yesterday, and has now been bailed.

In a fresh update, officers say a 28-year-old is currently in custody on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and grievous bodily harm.

Detective Inspector John Mullen from our Firearms Investigation Team said: “A second man is now in custody in connection with this incident, but I’d like to emphasise that our investigation is very much ongoing.

"We are particularly keen to speak to any residents in the areas around Junction Lane and Cecil Street who may have CCTV. Please contact us and let us make the assessment as to whether it is helpful. What may seem insignificant to you, might well be the crucial piece of evidence we are looking for.”
