Red Flood Alert

A red alert's been issued for flooding across Lancashire which means there's a danger to life.

More than 600 homes in Whalley have been evacuated with water pouring into properties there. The army's been deployed to assist.

The Environment Agency's asking people to stay safe and take action now with a number of Rivers expected to burst their banks.

The River Ribble burst its banks at Walton-le-Dale,  after reaching 5 metres, and the Environment Agency lists this area of the Ribble, and the section including Avenham Park, as a flood warning area.

Savick Brook has also burst its banks affecting Lea, Fulwood (near to Sharoe Green Lane) and Ashton. There are a number of localised flooding incidents reported affecting areas of Penwortham, Bamber Bridge, Lostock Hall and Walton Le Dale.

The River Calder has burst its banks in Billington and Whalley.

Penwortham Way (A59) closed due to flooding between Golden Way (A582) and Channel Way.

Leyland Road in Lower Penwortham - drivers are advised to avoid this area.

Abbey Village reported as being cut off from both sides due to flooding.

Wigan Road between Chorley and Standish (past Kilhey Court) has a large flooded area.

Chorley New Road, Horwich.

Parts of Avenham Park and Miller Park are flooded.

In Buckshaw Village, Central Avenue and Buckshaw Avenue are flooded.

Lower Leigh Road in Atherton is closed due to flooding between Lower Leigh Road and Wigan Road.

The Ribble Valley 10K, due to go ahead tomorrow has been cancelled due to severe flooding and standing water.

4.30pm Update:

A59 Preston New Road closed due to flooding between Potter Lane and M6 J31 (Samlesbury). Traffic can not access the M6 at J31 from Blackburn

Higher Walton Road (over River Darwen bridge) now closed in both directions due to rising river levels.
