Proposals for South Lancaster M6 link road paused
The council say they are going to be re-evaluating proposals
A proposed road, which would have linked South Lancaster with the M6 motorway has been paused, after the council said increasing costs meant it was a risk to the public purse.
The proposal would have included a new road between junction 33 of the M6 and the proposed garden village in South Lancaster, as well as a new park and ride.
Lancaster Council say inflation has resulted in rising construction costs over the past few years, which means pressures had been put on delivering the project.
The partners in the project are Lancashire County Council, Lancaster City Council and Homes England.
They say there are plans to develop South Lancaster, but the current plans will be pause and re-evaluated.
Aidy Riggott, cabinet member for Economic Development and Growth at the county council, said: "We've been working hard to try and deliver these transport and community improvements, and unlock access to the proposed Garden Village, but we're not able to continue with the proposals in their current form.
"In particular, we're faced with rising costs due to inflation, which would have affected how we can deliver these improvements within the current plans.
Funding for the scheme included an award of £140 million from the government's Housing Infrastructure Fund, which is now going to be returned.
