A prison officer from Lancashire, who had an inappropriate relationship with an inmate at HMP Kirkham, has been jailed.

Cheryl Hindle, 44, of Sultan Street, Accrington pleaded guilty to Misconduct in Public Office and unauthorised access to computer material.

It's after police launched an investigation in May 2022, when bosses at the prison became concerned that Hindle was involved in a relationship with Dean Holmes.

Hindle was investigated the following month, with officers finding love letters from Holmes - who was serving a three month sentence.

Detective Chief Inspector Chris McClellan from the North-West Regional Organised Crime Unit said:

“We are robust in our efforts to tackle prison corruption, working closely with HMPPS to proactively pursue people who undermine and destabilise the prison regime.

“The overwhelming majority of prison staff carry out their duties to the highest standards, however the minority who do engage in inappropriate behaviour will be investigated and the appropriate action taken.”
